Nokia 6630 : Big Cellphone

Nokia 6630 is not just a phone - its a smartphone. This one has a 220MHz processor making it a real powerhouse in the shape of a 3G Series 60 Smartphone.The shape does bother me. The on-board camera is a 1.3 megapixel camera which produces results as good as any other camera phone currently available. If you wanna be a paparazzi photographer, this phone has a new feature called "sequency" which provides for fast sequential picture snapping.

The big disappointment is the lack of a camera on the front of the phone. This has big implications when video calling. You can only make a video call using the rear camera ( what you see ). It is not possible on this phone to see the caller and the caller sees you at the same time.

A great phone we had the chance to review is the Nokia 7390. Launched around 01/7/2006 the 7390 is supporting the networks GSM 900/1800/1900/WCDMA 2100. Measuring only 90 x 47 x 19 mm and having a weight of only 115 g, this cell phone makes an interesting tool. The Nokia 7390 comes with a nice little camera of 3.0 MP and Video Calling. The phone is equipped with a Li-Ion battery, enabling a talk time of 3.00 hours and gives in standby 220 hours. Summing to its internal memory you can increase it with external memory with microSD/TransFlash memory cards.

The large screen lets you insert wallpapers of 240 x 320 px. Nokia has equipped its 7390 with a 64 chords ringtone ringer, making a great phone for you to add several ringtones. If you love to skin your phone you will be happy to know the 7390 has customizable themes enabled. The game collection included in the Nokia 7390 is running on J2ME, which supports many fun games! Unsurprisingly, since it is now standard in all phones, the 7390 enables both SMS and EMS.

BenQ Siemens EF81: Like Motorola RAZR

In terms of design, the clamshell by Siemens not at all reminds of Motorola's products, saving for strap fastening – though its design has already been adopted from RAZR and is a standard de facto. The model's appearance is quite fresh and is not trite, as it doesn't look very slim when compared to Motorola RAZR, but still, Motorola V3x doesn't seem to have vanishing depth. This impression is intensified by the handset's width and a bit splayed, smooth corners. The best thing about this model is that the front panel is made of polished metal, so one can easily spot the texture – despite all other phones, the material, used here, is solid, you can touch it, feel even.

The handset has 94x51x16 mm and 110 grams weight. This phone has camera with 2 MP resolution. The camera can record video clips in following resolutions 176x144, 128x96 and 96x80 pixels. Frame rate can be adjusted (7 or 15 fps). Maximal recording time is 5 minutes.

The front panel holds the internal TFT screen capable of displaying 262 K colors in 128x160 pixels resolutions. The screen itself is not bad, though I could doubt whether it really reflects 262K colors, but this would be a cavil. The display's diagonal measures 1.25 inches, in other words 20x22 mm. The sun doesn't cause fading effects, but the cover glass starts flashing and sometimes it causes certain impediments to reading information.

Having opened the device, you'll see a very qualitative internal screen, which claims the position of the leader in its class at present and competes with Motorola V3x on equal terms. The display provides QVGA resolution (240x320 pixels, 34x45 mm, 2.2 inches) and is capable to display up to 262 K colors. The capacity of battery is 950 mAh. According to the manufacturer's statement, the device can work up to 300 hours in stand-by mode and provide nearly 4.5 hours of talk time.

The device features 64 Mb of internal memory. The phonebook is capable of storing up to 500 entries. For each contact you can submit four telephone numbers, two fax numbers, for e-mail addresses, two page URLs, company's name, etc. The device offers the capability of recording up to 100 voice labels, at that you can have several commands assigned to one contact. Up to 100 entries are stored in the memory of each call type – incoming, outgoing and missed.

Three types of messages can be created – SMS, MMS and E-mail. When you are creating SMS messages, you can type long compositions since joined message system is supported, maximal length is 755 symbols of latin font and up to 330 for cyrilics. A photo, text, video, sound and contact can be inserted into MMS message. The email client supports SMTP, POP3, IMAP4 protocols. Maximal attachment size should not exceed 10mb.

Organizer consists of calendar, voice memos, world time settings and synchronization point. Calendar's organization is very good. Every new occasion is not related to any type. Each record consists of date, start/end time, alarm time (if required). Next you are free to select reoccurrence of the event (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, never).

Media player is brought up as separate menu item, it even has its own icon. Just like in S75, this phone has multimedia processor Imageon 2182 from ATI built-in. Alongside with traditional media files (ring tones, aac, mp3, 3gps, graphics, etc) the phone can playback video in Real Media 8/9 format. Media files can be viewed in full screen mode. Playlists that can include up to 25 files are supported, media player can work in minimized mode too. You can view graphic files in slide show mode.

The phone's performance is equal to SXG75, the difference is insignificant and depends only on firmware version. Unlike Siemens S75 and other x75 series models, this phone works faster.

Siemens SXG75: GPS and 3G

The phone has 134 g wright and dimensions of 111x53x20 mm. This model is equipped with a 2.2" display (TFD) showing 262K colours and the resolution is 320x240 pixels A VGA camera is placed in the top left corner and 2 MP on the behind teh phone. You can access the VGA camera pressing fast access buttons to the left of the screen, and a call one is nearby. The phone is equipped wih a Li-Ion battery of 1000mAh, which provides about 2 days of work in case of 20-30 minutes of talks and up to an hour and a half of other functions.

About 72 MB of dynamical memory are provided to a user, while the total memory bank reaches 128 MB, still the rest of the memory is allocated for system files and thus is not shown to a user. Any application can use all free memory. Phone and memory card contents are shown separately.

The address book allows about 500 entries. You can keep about four phone number, two fax numbers, four e-mail addresses, two site URLs, and a Company name and so on. Voice tags are available for a fast call (100 voice tags). A preinstalled WEB-browser supports HTML protocol.

Three types of messages are available - SMS, MMS and E-mail. Concatenated SMS can reach 755 characters in length if you use Latin and 330 characters in case of Cyrillic. T9 dictionary is provided. You can attach a picture, a text fragment, video, sound file and a contact to an MMS, that means all usual functions are present. The mail client supports such protocols as SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4. And even unsupported file types can be attached, the maximum size of an attachment should not exceed 10 MB.

The calendar is realized very well in this model. Each new event belongs to no type from the beginning. A theme, starts time and date, end time and date and a signal time (if necessary) are set for each entry. Then event recurrence is adjusted (daily, weekly, monthly, annually and never). A Dictaphone allocated in this item is called voice memos. And total entry duration forms 150 hours.

Four games are preinstalled on this phone. They are "Space shooter", "Marble Crossing", "Super Bomberman" and "Space Stack Attack". The games start and play with no noticeable slow down, they are carefully minimized at a call and then resume after the call is over. The same concerns other Java applications.

The player is located in a separate menu item and comes equipped with a special icon (similarly to the S75). Like the S75, this phone uses a multimedia CPU Imageon 2182 by ATI. However, the functions of this chip are realized fully as compared with the S75. And that is why this phone can play Real Media 8/9 besides traditional media files (ringtones, mp3, 3gp, and graphics). Media files can be viewed full screen. Playlists can contain up to 25 files, background mode is realized. Slide show mode is provided for graphics. FM-radio works only with the headset connected. You can scan the air and save about 10 FM stations. The receiver is quite sensitive and supports steady connection. RDS signals can be processed.

Siemens U15 : Second 3G handset

Siemens recently unveiled its second 3G phone, the U15, at a press conference in Vienna. The U15 is one of the most advanced 3G handsets to be released on the market, with features like tri-band GSM, auto switching to 3G, dual cameras, video playback, and a 65K color screen. Like the U10, which was based on the Motorola A830, the new U15 is based on the Motorola A835. While the specifications for the 2 phones aren't entirely the same, it is obvious that they are very similar. Surprisingly, the U15 is actually a little less advanced than the A835, since the U15 only has 64 MB internal memory (as opposed to 256mb in the A835), and is missing AGPS.

The dual cameras are capable of VGA (640x480 pixels) resolution, and can also record video clips of 176 x 144 resolution at 15 frames per second with audio. This is for one of the primary uses of 3G – video calling. The U15 also features audio and video players, featuring compatibility with most popular formats (including MP3). On the connection front, Bluetooth, infra-red, and USB interfaces are all available. No word yet on whether the U15 will support Bluetooth headsets. Being a business orientated phone, the U15 offers full email (POP3, IMAP, and SMTP) support, and a WAP 2.0 browser. Unlike some of the first generation 3G phones, the U15 is capable of using GPRS with its applications. Finally, the U15 also features Java applications support, and speakerphone functionality.

GSM/UMTS phone Motorola E1000

Motorola E1000 has 114 x 52 x 23 mm dimension and a large (for the announcement time) screen with a QVGA-resolution. The design of the phone is rather strict; there is a VGA camera gap near a loudspeaker, it serves for videocalls. The screen taking the majority of the body is 262K with the resolution of 240x320 pixels (36x45 mm). The picture is very vivid and the display is not as bad similar to Motorola triplets. Its big size, high resolution, and protective glass toning make this TFT display work well in the sun. The font is well-drawn and looks differently in the menu and when typing text. The screen is one of the strongest points of the device.

There are system buttons (volume adjustment, call, end call and access the network) around the screen, almost on sides. This button deposition rouses no difficulties making work with the phone pleasant that is understood in several hours of dealing with the phone.

A 810 mAh Li-Ion battery is used in the phone. According to the manufacturer it is capable of working for 155 hours in the standby mode an up to 2 hours in the talk mode. Not only a SIM-card holder but a TransFlash card memory slot is placed under the battery. That's natural hot card exchange is not provided in a phone with such a construction. There is a standard earphone output placed to the right and covered with a rubber shutter.

There are about 19 MB of memory in the phone with only 400 KB reserved from the beginning. Applications use both phone memory and a memory card. 1000 entries can be stored in the phone's memory, however only one number can be assigned to each. The phone support for SMS, EMS, MMS, POP3/IMAP4 e-mail client. There is a 1.2 MP camera integrated into the phone with 8x digital zoom.

Nokia N73 GSM/UMTS-smartphone

The smartphones by Nokia are getting smaller with every release, and this case isn't an exception – in fact, it's the apex of miniaturization of smartphones incorporating QVGA screen. The Nokia N73 measures 110x49x19 mm in size and weights 116 grams. In future the dimensions in this series will vary within the limits of these sizes, further reduction won't take place. The model's display boasts a diagonal of 2.4 inches (37x50 mm) and capable of showing up to 262 colors (TFT) at a resolution of 240x320 pixels.

The area a top the display features a forward-facing VGA-camera for video calls in 3G networks; however it may deliver photos of self as well. Right next to the that camera you will find a light sensor, automatically adjusting keypad backlighting brightness and turns it off in case the illumination level is sufficient, this sensor also houses a Bluetooth indicator lamp.

One of interesting parts of this handset is introduction of new slide-show mode in gallery, it can be launched by holding corresponding key on side of handset. When transferring from one picture to another you see zooming effect, you can also select any ring tone or mp3 file that will be launched in background. Gallery is always displayed horizontally, it is slightly hard to master at first, especially in case you have a lot of files and you're looking for one specific. Creating custom albums and moving all photos into them can come up as a solution, but this method will not suit everyone. Timeline viewing option as in Sony Ericsson phones would fit this handset by 100%. When viewing every image alone you will be able to quickly send them to printer or add to special printer bucket.

Model is based on traditional TI OMAP 1710 platform (only N93 is using new platform) this makes it related with other handsets; processor frequency is 220mHz, there are 20.5mb of RAM, and user has around 42mb of memory for his needs. All data can be stored on memory card.

Bluetooth version is 2.0 and it supports EDR. Handset supports following profiles:
BIP-ImagePush;
DUN-GW;
FT-Server;
HandsFree-AG (1.0);
Headset-AG;
OBEX;
OPP-Client;
OPP-Server;
SIM Access-Server.

Unfortunately there is no A2DP support, this means that you cannot listen music via stereo Bluetooth headset.

Nokia 7600 Early 3G Phone

Technically, Nokia 7600 is the company's first two-system handset (2G/3G) that can work in GSM 900/1800 and WCDMA. The model also supports standard 3G services, such as streaming audio and video playback, and has a 29-MB built-in memory.
Design and Construction

Nokia 7600 looks quite uncommon, as can be easily seen from the photos. It is not minute, but not huge either: it measures and weighs about the same as Nokia 6600. The handset is supposed to be worn as a pendant, and it has a little hole for a neck band. Although it seems a bit too big for a pendant, it looks more like a pocket-size device. Its body is made of a usual plastic which is not exactly bad but looks nothing grand either.

The keypad is divided into two rows each placed along the side of the display, and should be handled with both hands. A similar solution was used in the Siemens SX1 smartphone, but in our opinion, it is better realised in Nokia 7600. Apart from the numeric unit, the front panel also has call and cancel keys, two soft buttons and a 5-way joystick. The keys are easily discernible by touch, but their uncommon arrangement makes "blind handling" virtually impossible. .

The 7600 display has a 128x160 resolution, unusual for Nokia Series 40 (128x128 being a standard one). This is a TFT display, and it supports 65,535 colours. It has little difference from most similar screens; its brightness, contrast, and richness are standard, and the display has relatively large pixels.

Nokia 7600 is based on the latest edition of the Series 40 platform. The user interface, despite being traditional for Nokia, also has a number of innovations. For instance, the main menu can now be shown as an array of icons (without captions). The array consists of three columns and six lines, only three of which can be displayed at a time. Confirmation is now done by pressing the joystick. In some cases it duplicates a traditional soft key function, in other cases it is the only way to execute a command. The context menu is invoked with the left soft key.

Sony Ericsson's Super-Snapper K800

Sony Ericsson has busted out the new K800 and K790 Cyber-shot branded camera phones at a press event this morning. While features are the same between the new models, the K800 is for UMTS networks, whereas the K790 is aimed at EDGE enabled areas.

The new Sony Ericsson K800/K790 is a sleek black candy bar style handset, and comes loaded with some high-end features. Bluetooth 2.0 is on board, as is a full media player and HTML compatible browser with support for RSS feeds.

Where the Sony Ericsson K800/K790 really shines is in its imaging talents. A 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera is paired with a 2" QVGA display and Memory Stick Micro expansion slot. To add to this, the K800/K790 also includes a Xenon flash - the same style of flash seen on normal digital cameras - and something Sony Ericsson is calling BestPic. With the BestPic system, pressing the shutter button actually captures nine pictures, four before and four after the actual image framed, which are then displayed as thumbnails, allowing you to select the image that best captures your intended subject.

The Sony Ericsson K800 will be available in two versions - the K800i for Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa, and the K800c for mainland China. The K790 will be available in three versions - the K790i for Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa, the K790c for mainland China, and the K790a for the Americas - the latter exchanging the GSM 900MHz band with 850MHz.
